The Board of Directors for the Capital Area Parkinson’s Society (CAPS) is a group of dedicated professionals who help to successfully guide our organization. Most have been directly impacted by Parkinson’s Disease, and all of our Board Members are compassionate individuals who work diligently to improve the lives of those who are impacted by PD.

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to our two newest Board Members, Mike Tipps and Kathrin Brewer.

Mike Tipps

Mike is a 40+ year real estate entrepreneur and resident of Austin who graduated from UT Austin with a BBA in Finance. He served as the Co-Founder and Managing Principal of a local commercial real estate service company for 25 years. Mike has been married to his wife Amy for 35+ years, and they share four children together. His family and work experience led to his involvement in various non-profit organizations including Meals on Wheels, Education Connection, serving as a Sunday school teacher and elder at church, and co-founding Journey2Manhood, a ministry for dads and sons.

Kathrin Brewer

Kathrin has served two decades in non-profit and school leadership roles, preceded by a similar tenure in semiconductor manufacturing after graduating with a BS in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley. Her husband Jim, also a chemical engineer, graduated a year ahead of her and their relationship led her to Austin. Kathrin’s grandfather lived with Parkinson’s for a very long time, and she’s kept abreast of medical developments since that time. She is looking forward to learning and building support for our Parkinson’s community by leveraging her experience serving on boards for public schools, private schools, Safeplace, and private ventures.

How John McGlothlin III Came to be on the CAPS Board of Directors

Mike and Kathrin are joining nine other current CAPS Board Members, one of which is John McGlothlin III. John has had the pleasure of serving on the CAPS Board of Directors for more than three years, and for the last two years he’s served as Treasurer.

John is one of those rare native-born Austinites, although he spent 15 years in the Midwest. This included time in Chicago and then in Bloomington, Indiana, where he earned his doctorate and met his wife, Blair. John returned to Texas in 2017 to begin his career as a financial planner at Southwest Retirement Advisors, LLC. In this role, he provides financial services to those entering and enjoying their retirement years, some of which are living with Parkinson’s.

John’s relationship with CAPS grew quite organically from that career. In 2020, CAPS contacted Austin’s chapter of the Financial Planning Association to ask if members had an interest in working with the Parkinson’s community. By chance, around that time John had taken on not one but two clients with PD. He saw CAPS as an opportunity to both learn more about PD—as he knew nothing about the condition at the time—and to support deserving folks like his new clients.

As Central Texas continues to rapidly expand, so too do the needs of the PD community in Austin and the surrounding area. John is honored to support CAPS as it enables that community to thrive!

CAPS Volunteer Spotlight: Social Worker Lillian Phillips Provides Support

We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge one of our vital volunteers, Lillian Phillips. Lillian has been taking time from her day job at Accentcare to support CAPS by facilitating the 2nd Tuesday Care Partner’s support group at Parson’s House. A long time Austinite and social worker, Lillian has dedicated her career to helping seniors and their care partners navigate the medical landscape with compassion and encouragement.

Thank you so much for your support and assistance Lillian!
