C.A.P.S. June 2024 Newsletter

Letter from C.A.P.S. Board Member, Kara Doctor, P.T.

Hello, my name is Kara Doctor, I am a physical therapist and have worked with people with Parkinson’s Disease since 1997! I worked for a Movement Disorder Specialist in Austin for 10 years and was able to interact very closely with people who had PD, as well as their families, care partners and friends. We always referred our newly diagnosed PD folks to CAPS for resources and support. CAPS was the only support group in the area at that time and was vital to many of our patients to know and understand that there was a supportive community that truly understood Parkinson’s.

I thoroughly enjoyed my many years as a physical therapist, and in 2017, I had the opportunity to work as a medical device specialist for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). I have most recently joined a company called Insightec, offering an incisionless, day treatment option for those with Tremor Dominant Parkinson’s Disease (TDPD), as well as those with Essential Tremor. The treatment is called Focused Ultrasound (FUS)and is performed on an outpatient basis. It is a blessing to be able to be involved in a treatment that can potentially change the lives of the people who receive it.

I started serving on the Board of Directors for CAPS in 2012. I felt that I could offer some value based on my experience and training. I was trained in LSVT Big for PD, gave presentations to other therapists for treatment strategies for Parkinson’s, and evaluated patients for various treatment options.

I helped to start a DBS Support Group alongside other CAPS Board members in 2014.

I have been on the CAPS board for 12 years and I have watched as our program has grown and touched the lives of many people with Parkinson’s, as well as their families. CAPS has been making a difference in the Parkinson’s Community for 40 years now! We are excited to Celebrate those 40 years with a Birthday Bash on October 5th,2024. Look for more information on this celebration in the next few months.

CAPS is working diligently and partnering with others in the Central Texas area to continue to meet the needs of the PD community. In June we will begin a “Partners of PD” group in South Austin at the same time as the People with PD group on the 3rd Monday of the month. Shake Shack Austin has started offering free Speech Therapy sessions and during the summer will offer art classes as a fun break and socialization.

We look forward to offering more services and support within the PD community!

Warmly,
Kara
