Capital Area Parkinson's Society

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month!

Letter from CAPS President, Victor Becker

Greetings gentlepeople,

The grass is “going green.” The wild flowers are exploding in all their glorious colors, producing a breathtaking landscape of blue, orange and yellow. It is springtime in central Texas. This past winter was gentle on the landscaping in that we were spared a prolonged freeze.

It has been a busy and productive Q1 for CAPS. Christi has been very active in expanding our services to more PWPD and their caregivers. We have started a new support group in South Austin. We launched another Shake Shack social group on the 3rd Monday of every month from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Belmont Village Senior Living in Lakeway. This is in addition to the original Shake Shack on the 2nd Friday of the month from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Lamar Senior center.

We are also very excited to add 3 dynamic new board members. Mike Tipps, Kathrin Brewer and Amy Blakely-Laine. They bring a wealth of nonprofit experience and business acumen to our board. Welcome Kathrin, Amy and Mike.

In addition to the new board members effective April 1, I will be moving from my current role as President of the Board of Directors to a new role on the CAPS advisory board. I will be working closely with CAPS board member, Sidney Collin to increase the number of advisors and clearly define how CAPS can benefit from the vast knowledge and experience of the individuals that are and will be on the advisory board.

We have begun the process of evaluating options for a new President of the Board of Directors. This includes evaluating internal and external resources. In the interim, Jennifer Prescott, Executive Vice President and John McGlothlin III, Treasurer will continue to ensure board functions are fulfilled.

As you all know April is Parkinson’s Awareness month. We see April as an opportunity to increase awareness of PD and to highlight where and when those in need can receive guidance and support. CAPS has been providing resources to the central Texas PD community for 40 years. Our passion for helping has not diminished over that period; to the contrary, we are excited to continue developing new strategies for providing services and education to our community for years to come.

Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the springtime.

Warm regards,
Victor, CAPS President
